- Reconstruction of deglacial N- and O- cycling in the intermediate Pacific
Project: NOiR (Nutrient Budgets in the Ocean in the recent and past environments)
In this fast-growing world, the dependence on chemical fertilizers for increased food production comes with a high price of disruption to the marine environment. Anjaly Menon is an Erasmus Mundus Alumni who finished Marine Environment and Resources program in the year 2020. She is currently working as a Ph.D. student on the NOiR project at the Institute for Geology, supervised by Dr. Nicolaas Glock and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schmiedl. She is focusing on climate relevant biogeochemical cycle: the marine nitrogen cycle. Anjaly will utilize benthic foraminifera to reconstruct past nitrate concentrations in the intermediate Pacific over the last deglaciation. In order to predict future changes in marine nutrient budgets, it is not only important to develop a comprehensive understanding about the recent nutrient cycles but also to reconstruct past nutrient cycling focusing on periods with rapidly changing climatic conditions.
