We are proud to announce the successful MSc thesis presentation of our SICSS member Jonas Pfau
His thesis "Compound Atmospheric Events Leading to Low Renewable Energy Supply" was supervised by PD Dr. Richard Blender and Dr. Vera Melinda Galfi.
Jonas investigated periods of low wind, low solar, and simultaneous low wind and solar energy production in order to examine if, how often, and where such events occur in Germany and Europe for three different scenarios. He also assessed the behaviour of different thresholds using a statistical approach, the extremal index. Further, he compared the results with the prevailing atmospheric conditions and with the German Weather Service's weather type classification and the North Atlantic Oscillation Index in order to find out whether such events can be predicted.
Jonas was a member of the Meteorological Institute at Universität Hamburg.
Jonas' future plans?
Working in the renewable energy sector, specifically with wind energy to effectively combat climate change
