Welcome Buddy Program
Welcome Buddy Programs aim to help newly enrolled international doctoral candidates to get a good start with their research stay and everyday life in Hamburg. Every doctoral student from abroad (Incoming Buddy) gets matched up with a current Hamburg doctoral student (Welcome Buddy) who can make the international doctoral student’s arrival in Hamburg easier. Welcome Services for doctoral researchers
Are you a registered doctoral researcher at the MIN Faculty? Would you like to support a prospective or new doctoral researcher from abroad (incoming buddy) and receive an individual certifi cate for the extracurricular voluntary activities?
Then join the Welcome Buddy Program of the MIN faculty to support incoming international doctoral researchers as follows:
- Correspondence via email prior to arrival in Hamburg
- Pick up from the airport/train station on arrival
- Help them to fi nd their ways around Hamburg and the UHH Campus
- Support with the necessary administrative paper work
- Help them settle in Hamburg (e.g. public transport, CityBike)
- Exchange of culture and experience abroad
The Buddy Program activities can be approved as one part of the Certificate Intercultural Competence (CIC). Registration is possible at this link.

Life in Hamburg
In 2017, Hamburg was ranked the most livable city in Germany and made it to the top 10 on the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Livability Report.
The city offers beautiful parks, the Alster Lake in the city center, the river Elbe with its harbor and beaches - there are many places to spend your free time in the city of Hamburg. In addition, the nearby North- and Baltic Sea are worthwhile a visit.
At the same time, people lead an urban lifestyle: In nearly every part of the city you will find bars and cafés. If you are into sports or culture, you will find numerous sports clubs, museums, theatres, cinemas and concerts serving any musical taste.
