We are proud to announce the successful MSc thesis presentation of our SICSS member Sina Pinter
Her thesis "What prevented the formation of fringing reefs at the Saya de Malha Bank? – An analysis of the physical effects on fringing reefs" was supervised by PD Dr. Tim Rixen (ZMT - Bremen) and PD Dr. Thomas Pohlmann (IfM Theoretical Oceanography - Hamburg).
Sina investigated the effect of an internal wave on the fringing reef formation at the Saya de Malha Bank in the Western Indian Ocean. For that, she used field data from the SO270 research cruise in 2019. With the data, she was able to investigate how the currents and the internal wave behave, how they impact the biogeochemistry of the water column, and how this affects reef-building organisms.
Sina was a member of the Institute of Oceanography at Universität Hamburg.
Sina's future plans?
In her future, Sina wants to continue researching coral reefs, help protect these beautiful diverse ecosystems in a changing world, and she would like to teach inquisitive students herself one day (not only about corals, but oceanography as a whole).
