We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Alexander Schütt
His dissertation “Significance of soil water availability for growth and vitality of recently planted urban street trees” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Annette Eschenbach (Institute of Soil Science, Universität Hamburg) and Prof. Dr. Kai Jensen (Institute of Plant Science and Microbiology, Universität Hamburg).
Alexander Schütt combined two major approaches in his research: At monitoring sites of recently planted street trees in Hamburg, he assessed dynamics of water availability in soils and related this dynamics to vitality/stress of the trees. In addition, a field-experiment was set up in which nine different tree taxa were planted in three different substrates/soils. In this experiment, Alexander Schütt again investigated the dynamics of water availability and the response of the planted trees to this dynamics.
Alexander was a member of the Institute of Soil Science of Universität Hamburg.
Alexander’s future plans?
Alexander already started one year ago to work in a big tree nursery (Lorenz von Ehren) in the southern part of Hamburg. In the nursery, which contains of up to 600 ha of agricultural land, he is responsible for environmental adaptation, set up of various short- and long-term experiments, digitalization of production schemes and now he will start from October on to take over the lead of production in a branch plant of the nursery in Holm (Wedel).
