We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Ravi Jayaweera
His dissertation “Urban Sustainability Transitions in the Global South: Navigating (in)stabilities for Transformative Change” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Martina Neuburger and Dr. Michael Waibel (both Institute of Geography, Universität Hamburg).
Ravi investigated the building and urban development sector of Phnom Penh to develop transition strategies to support transformative change towards sustainability. To this end, he developed a framework of (in)stability configurations of socio-technical systems which can be used to identify seeds of destabilization. Based on this analysis, he conceptualized a contextualized form of transition management (Sustainable Building Arena) and an ecopreneurship incubation programme (Sustainable Building Incubator) which he then implemented with his colleagues of the Build4People project. He finally evaluated these interventions in terms of their (dis)empowering effects for the participants to suggest conceptual improvements.
He was a member of the Institute of Geography at Universität Hamburg.
Ravi’s future plans?
Ravi is going to stay in the region to work on urban sustainability transitions.
