We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Qiyun Ma
His dissertation "Extreme events: maintenance mechanisms and energetics" was supervised by Prof. Dr. Christian Franzke and Prof. Dr. Johanna Baehr.
Qiyun diagnoses the maintenance mechanisms of summer heatwaves over Europe and Inner-East Asia, investigates variations of atmospheric energetics, and explores the relationship between hot extremes and atmospheric energetics. His research results showed that transient vorticity fluxes are crucial for maintaining regional heatwaves through large-scale circulation anomalies. The dynamic maintenance mechanisms of the large-scale circulation anomalies might have been altered by regional climate warming. Finally, he showed the ongoing climate warming cause the heat waves to become more frequent and longer-lasting in the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes.
Qiyun was a member of the Meteorological Institute at Universität Hamburg and a member of the CEN Graduate School SICSS (School of Integrated Climate and Earth System Sciences)
Qiyun's future plans:
Qiyun is looking for an interesting postdoc position in Europe. We wish him all the best for his further career and are happy to stay in contact!
