We are proud to announce the successful MSc thesis presentation of our SICSS member Eduardo Alastrué de Asenjo
His thesis "Causal attribution of low AMOC strengths to anthropogenic influence" was supervised by Prof. Dr. Johanna Baehr and Dr. Armineh Barkhordarian.
Eduardo investigated how humans affect the general circulation of the ocean: he studied the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), and analysed the possible attribution of a weakening in the AMOC to human emissions. By producing Earth system model simulations of an alternative world where humans impacts are not present, he was able to quantify the human importance for the weakening. Overall, his results show that, while past AMOC low states are undecidedly linked to human emissions, future projections reveal humans as a virtually certain necessary cause of the weakening.
Eduardo was a member of the Institute of Oceanography (Climate Modelling Group) at Universität Hamburg.
Eduardo's future plans?
His future plans are to continue his career as a climate scientist in academia. He will soon start as a PhD candidate in Hamburg at the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling.
