We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Anna Miesner
Her dissertation “Forecasting the Marine Biological Environment. Exploring the Spatial Distribution of a North Atlantic Fish Species at the Example of Blue Whiting” was supervised by Dr. Mark R. Payne (DTU Aqua, Technical University of Denmark), Prof. Dr. Corinna Schrum (Helmholtz Zentrum hereon) and Prof. Dr. Johanna Baehr (Universität Hamburg).
Anna's dissertation contributes towards forecasting the marine biological environment. The overall aim of her dissertation was to better understand, model, and forecast changes in the spatial distribution of marine organisms. More specifically, she investigated how the marine climate (temperature and salinity) influences the spawning distribution of a North Atlantic fish species called blue whiting. In particular, her dissertation highlights the value of salinity as a habitat characteristic for marine organisms and of employing an Earth System Model for developing distributional forecasts of marine organisms in the North East Atlantic. Thereby, her work contributes towards a pro-active and dynamic management of our common marine resources.
Anna was a member of DTU Aqua, Centre for Ocean Life in Copenhagen at the Technical University of Denmark, the Institute of Coastal Systems - Analysis and Modeling at the Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon in Geesthacht, and the Institute of Oceanography at the Universität Hamburg.
Anna’s future plans?
Straight after her defense, Anna will go on maternity leave since she is expecting her second child :-)
