We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Ya-Qing Zhan.
Her dissertation “The Role of Culture in The Resilience to Wind: The Case of the Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Beate Ratter and Dr. Corinna de Guttry (both Universität Hamburg).
Ya-Qing investigated the role of culture in the resilience to wind on the Penghu archipelago, Taiwan. By mapping the traces of wind in the landscape, exploring the historical background through archival research, and examining the cognitive and mental dimensions of Penghu residents, she found that culture orchestrates wind resilience and winter monsoon is deeply rooted in Penghu culture.
Ya-Qing was a member of the Institute of Geography at Universität Hamburg.
Her future plans?
Ya-Qing is collaborating on research with APLAC (Research Center for Asia-Pacific Languages and Cultures) in Taiwan and intends to write her second novel. She plans to stay in academia, focusing on cultural comparative research on resilience.
