We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Lea Sophia Schröder.
Her dissertation “Sustainable agricultural adaptation under climate change: Insights from Northeast India and the Brazilian Amazon” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Uwe Schneider and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Scheffran (both Universität Hamburg).
Lea investigated impacts of climate change on the sustainability and adaptation of agricultural production systems in Northeast India and the Brazilian Amazon. In Northeast India, she used biophysical modeling to assess impacts on soil erosion in shifting cultivation. She also conducted a survey with indigenous tribal farmers to understand which factors influence the adoption of soil and water conservation practices. In Brazil, Lea investigated the conversion from cattle ranching to soybean production and other intensification processes. She identified several constraints in agricultural adaptation processes, such as risk-averse attitudes of farmers and a lack of practical knowledge, and thereby revealed important gaps in state-of-the-art land use assessment models.
She was a member of the Research Unit Sustainability and Climate Risks at Universität Hamburg.
Lea's future plans?
She will stay as a postdoctoral researcher in the CLICCS-C2 project.
