We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Emily Quiroga-Gómez.
Her dissertation “Essays on Adaptation and Behavioural Responses to Abrupt Changes” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Hermann Held and Prof. Dr. Moritz Drupp (both Universität Hamburg).
Emily investigated different perspectives on adaptation at both the socio-ecological system level and the individual level. She and her colleagues developed an analytical framework to assess adaptation in socio-ecological systems and applied that framework to the North Sea flatfish fisheries. Moreover, she examined the role of individual characteristics, such as culture and risk preferences, in the adaptation process. The latter involved a case study that explored changes in risk preferences following the 2023 earthquake in Turkey.
She was a member of the Research Unit Sustainability and Climate Risks (FNK), and Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at Universität Hamburg.
Emily's future plans?
In the short term, during the next six months, she will continue working at the FNK and publish her scientific articles; in the long run, she sees herself continuing working in the academia.
