We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Jan Kossack.
His dissertation “Shelf-specific processes in the ocean carbon cycle: an investigation of tides” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Corinna Schrum, Dr. Moritz Mathis and Prof. Dr. Helmuth Thomas (all Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon).
Jan's PhD research explored the role of shelf-specific processes in shaping the marine carbon cycle, with a particular focus on the influence of tides. His work emphasized the importance of understanding how tidal dynamics affect carbon fluxes in shelf seas, which are critical regions for global carbon cycling. Jan contributed significantly to the development and implementation of a novel coupled physical-biogeochemical model framework designed for the North-West European shelf. Jan's research contributes valuable insights into the mechanisms driving carbon cycling on shelves and provides a flexible modeling platform to address key uncertainties in future studies.
Jan was a member of the Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon, Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis & Modelling and Cluster of Excellence CLICCS at the University of Hamburg.
His future plans?
Jan will continue working in the CLICCS A5 Project on the Land-Ocean Transition Zone as a PostDoc for now.
