We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Anjaly Govindankutty Menon.
Her dissertation “Reconstruction of deglacial N- and O- cycling in the intermediate Pacific” was supervised by Dr. Nicolaas Glock and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schmiedl (both, University of Hamburg).
Anjaly developed a fully automated image analysis technique for detecting the pores of unicellular eukaryotes from the oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) in the Pacific. She applied this technique to reconstruct nitrate levels at these Pacific ODZs for the last 22,000 years. She also studied the redox conditions there. Her study provided information that nitrate levels and redox conditions changed in these ODZs during different time periods. Reconstruction of nitrate and redox conditions from her PhD project will be helpful for predicting future changes in marine nitrogen cycle.
Anjaly was a member of the Institute for Geology at the University of Hamburg.
Her future plans?
Anjaly is currently working at the UHH within her post-doc contract and will finish on March 31. Afterwards, she would like to contribute her skills to sustainable projects in Germany.
