We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Tania Yaoska Guillén Bolaños.
Her dissertation “Progress on Climate Adaptation: Identifying Ways for Enhancing the Implementation and Assessment of Progress on Climate Adaptation” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Scheffran (UHH, Institute of Geography/CLISEC) and Prof. Dr. Daniela Jacob (GERICS).
As part of her research, Tania conducted a Delphi analysis with Latin American experts to examine definitions of climate adaptation and successful adaptation. She advanced the IPCC’s feasibility framework by integrating local knowledge and expertise, demonstrated through a case study in Puerto Morazán, Nicaragua. Tania also developed a framework connecting climate adaptation and implementation science to address barriers to the implementation to adaptation action, enhance evidence-based practices, and leverage practitioners’ insights. This work included the analysis of 20 climate adaptation projects funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) across African Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and Latin America and the Caribbean. Her research provides valuable tools to improve the implementation and effectiveness of climate adaptation initiatives at both local and regional levels.
Tania’s research was conducted at the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. At Universität Hamburg, Tania was a Research Group Climate Change and Security (CLISEC) member.
Her future plans?
After completing her PhD, Tania will embark on a new adventure as a mother, spending a few months on maternity leave next year. Following this, she plans to return to GERICS, where she aims to continue supporting processes that translate scientific insights into actionable knowledge. Tania intends to remain actively involved in international policy and scientific processes such as the UNFCCC and the IPCC while also supporting national and local adaptation efforts. Additionally, she looks forward to strengthening her collaboration with research and practitioner networks to enhance climate adaptation strategies.
