Alexandra Franzke and Sebastian Zubrzycki from SICSS visited Northwestern University (NWU) and Argonne National Lab near Chicago. The cooperation aims to promote joint projects in the fields of climate science and sustainable technology development. The purpose of the visit was to deepen the partnership, expand joint research and support projects, and open up access to world-leading research technology.
During their stay, Alexandra Franzke and Sebastian Zubrzycki met with Prof. Dr. Matthew Grayson (Director, McCormick Global Initiatives), the coordinator of the partnership at NWU, among others. In 40 meetings with approximately 50 professors, deans and institute directors, they gained insights into two leading research institutions: NWU and Argonne National Laboratory. In addition to professional exchanges, personal connections and networks were also strengthened – an important foundation for intensifying cooperation in the future.
So far, ICSS students have benefited most from the cooperation: they can complete their master's thesis with a research stay at NWU, including co-supervision on site – generously supported by a scholarship. In the future, the existing cooperation is to be further expanded. Plans also include research stays for doctoral students and postdocs, as well as mentoring opportunities across the ocean and closer cooperation between professors.
Students and doctoral candidates at the University of Hamburg benefit twice over: academically – through the exceptionally close and individual supervision at NWU and the outstanding research infrastructure – and privately. The university is located directly on Lake Michigan and offers water sports such as sailing and surfing, its own beach section and international campus life.
The SICSS team was particularly impressed by their visit to the Argonne National Laboratory. It has supercomputers for climate models, atmospheric measurement systems and interdisciplinary data platforms – ideal for research into climate resilience, emissions and sustainable energy systems. ‘The Argonne Lab is one of the leading multidisciplinary research centres in the USA,’ says Alexandra Franzke. ‘We are delighted to be able to give SICSS members access to cutting-edge technology through this cooperation.’
