4: Networking
Networking activities among postdocs and senior researchers will continue to foster peer-level exchanges. Peer tandems will be initiated to strengthen collegial interaction, providing peers with the opportunity to give feedback and offer advice.
In contrast to doctoral candidates, postdocs (R2) and senior researchers (R3) constitute a more heterogeneous status group among scientists. An important goal is to foster community building in this group through exchange and network events in CEN and CLICCS.
If you are not yet on the postdoc and senior researcher mailinglist, please contact Alexandra Franzke. The letter informs you about interesting events, news and third-party funding.
We also have an MS Teams platform for quickly sharing current topics and arranging for joint lunch meetings and coffee breaks. Please sign in
New: CLICCS lunch and after-work meetups
Sitting together in the park with a cool drink in the evening after work or having lunch and chatting about personal matters. Recently, CLICCS members have been organizing lunch and after-work meetups. If you want to join, send a short email to Alexandra Franzke (alexandra.franzke"AT"uni-hamburg.de)to be added to the WhatsApp group.
Next event: CLICCS Pre-Retreat
On September 9th and 10th, a CLICCS Pre-Retreat will take place in Travemünde-Brodten, involving all postdocs, senior researchers, and doctoral candidates in CLICCS. Please register here. Our topics will be:
-
Topic 1: Positionality and self-reflection of young climate scientists
We will explore how, as scientists, we can and should acknowledge the significant impact of our positionality and decisions on our research and academic practices at a broader level.
There will be a focus on self-reflection regarding our role as climate scientists in society, emphasizing the reciprocal influence between our work and ourselves, as integral parts of society both as scientists and citizens. We will critically examine the researcher's role and influence in relation to their research and the inherent connection between them.
We will acknowledge our privileges compared to the majority of society and explore the extent to which this may lead to detachment from various perspectives and vulnerabilities, including diverse ways of understanding the world and real-life experiences with climate-related impacts resulting in loss and damage.

Topic 2: Navigating the challenges and opportunities of large interdisciplinary research projects as young climate scientists
As CLICCS draws to a close, we will analyze the current status of early career researchers (ECRs) within CLICCS and constructively critique their future within the project. We'll explore questions such as defining the roles and influence ECRs have within CLICCS, as well as exploring the possibilities to actively shape individual projects and how this impacts the larger CLICCS framework. In addition, we'll discuss avenues for engaging in joint work and exchange with fellow ECRs and senior scientists.
Having reflected on the status quo, we'll then brainstorm what further support ECRs need from CLICCS to fully realize their potential and positively shape the project's trajectory. We anticipate that this will include the identification of how to keep existing institutional support mechanisms active and vibrant, while also identifying areas where ECRs need further institutional support or resources.
Finally, we'll develop an action plan to implement the changes and improvements we've identified. This plan will consider how future ECRs could benefit from our experience, and identify strategies for bringing our insights and ideas to broader attention and building momentum at the CLICCS retreat.
