We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Ge Cheng
Her dissertation “Parameterization of canopy processes for atmospheric models” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Heinke Schlünzen and Prof. Dr. Bernd Leitl (both Meteorological Institute, Universität Hamburg).
Ge has developed a parameterization for heteogeneous urban canopies in numerical models. The new parameterization is based on the nudging concept and has the advantages of accuracy, efficiency and simplicity of implementation in numerical models. The parameterization has been implemented in the mesoscale model METRAS and model results show that the parameterization can well represent the urban impact on wind, turbulence and temperature fields. Due to the low computational cost and the basic building parameters the approach may be used to consider urban impacts in global scale models.
Ge was a member of the Meteorological Institute of the Universität Hamburg.
Ge’s future plans?
Ge is now working for the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) (English: Association of German Engineers) focusing on environmental meteorology.
