We are proud to announce the successful disputation of our SICSS member Juan Fernando Mendoza Ledezma.

His dissertation “Climate Change Adaptation Dynamics: Exploring Rural Communities' Perceptions and Strategies in Cauca, Colombia” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Martina Neuburger and Dr. Tobias Schmitt (both Universität Hamburg).

Juan Mendoza's doctoral thesis analyses the vulnerability of two rural communities in the Colombian Department of Cauca in the context of climate change. Using the Community Capitals Framework – CCF concept, which he intersects with concepts of vulnerability and basic needs, Juan Mendoza analyses the various aspects of this topic from the perspective of stakeholders and decision-makers in the communities. He describes the possibilities and limitations of adaptation that could increase community resilience.

Juan was a member of the Institute of Geography at Universität Hamburg.
