During the fourth semester, students work on their master’s theses. For the compilation of data and information you will work in close cooperation with one of our research groups. The master’s thesis consists of your written thesis and the thesis presentation which includes questions from your supervisors and a scientific audience.
M.Sc. Thesis “Integrated Climate System Sciences”
Module Number: ESW-CLIFINAL
Qualification Objectives:
Students can apply key methods for studying climate-relevant processes and their interactions, enabling them to address a specific research question. They develop the skills necessary for planning, conducting, and scientifically presenting their first independent research project, as well as for discussing and defending their results in a professional colloquium.
Contents:
A scientific research question in the field of Integrated Climate Sciences is independently investigated using scientific methods and documented according to academic standards. Based on the current state of research, possible solutions to the research question are first identified and then implemented.
The obtained results must be appropriately presented and critically evaluated. The module concludes with a public institutional presentation followed by a discussion.
Teaching Formats (Indicated in Semester Hours per Week - SWS):
Individual Learning
Prerequisites for Participation:
Students can enroll in the final module if they have earned at least 60 credit points.
Module Examination:
Master’s Thesis (30 to 60 pages)
Final Presentation with Discussion (20-minute presentation, 10–15 minutes of discussion)
The Master’s Thesis contributes 80% to the final module grade, while the Final Presentation with Discussion contributes 20%.
Workload in Individual Module Components (Indicated in Credit Points - CP):
- Master’s Thesis: 27 CP
- Final Presentation with Discussion: 3 CP
Total Workload of the Module: 30 Credit Points
Duration: One semester
Frequency of Offering: Winter semester and summer semester
Module Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Christian Beer
How do I register my M.Sc. Thesis Supervisor?
For your M.Sc. Thesis you will need (at least) 2 supervisors. Please note that at least one supervisor needs to be a Full Professor ("Prof"), or qualify as a Professor (i.e. "PD" or "Dr. habil."). If you find your desired supervisors in the list below (List of approved thesis supervisors), a formal registration is not required at all, since this list contains supervisors who are pre-approved for the M.Sc. ICSS.
Should you not find your desired supervisor(s) listed as pre-approved, you will have to hand in an informal application to the Examination Board requesting a registration of this/these persons. In this application, please shortly explain why this person should serve as your supervisor. Please send this application including a short scientific CV of the person of your choice to Prof. Christian Beer (head of the Examination Board). Please put Dr. Sebastian Zubrzycki in the CC of your e-mail as well. You will then receive the decision of the Examination Board - also via e-mail.
